During the 1996 elections, the flag bearer of the NPP was Ex-President Kufuor and Ex-President Jerry Rawlings for the NDC. After the election, a friend of mine, KT Wilson who later became my business partner and who also resided in Japan, came to tell me that he saw a lot of potential in J.A Kufuor as the presidential candidate for the NPP in the year 2000 Presidential elections. K.T had just returned from Ghana after the 1996 elections. He was positive that he could become the next President of Ghana. Based on this assumption we concluded that it will be a good thing if we could invite him to Japan and introduce him to the Japanese business community and politicians to help him solicit for funds for his campaign.

K. T Wilson explained to me that after the 1996 election, Kufuor was the first Presidential candidate to re- register to be the flag bearer of the National Patriotic Party.  From my own investigations, I found out that he obtained 40% of the popular vote when he contested in December 1996 elections. I also received favorable recommendation from people I talked to about him. In September 1997, both of us decided to invite JA Kufuor to Japan.  Before we did, we informed our Godfather that we had invited our uncle to Japan. We explained to him he was the Presidential candidate in the 1996 elections and had also re-registered for the 2000 elections. The name of our godfather was Ryoske Matsuura. He accepted that we invite him to Japan.     In 1997, Mr. Kufuor arrived in Japan via Frankfurt on a Lufthansa flight.

K. T Wilson, Daisuke Matsuura, and I picked him up from the Narita airport and drove him to his hotel. I must say that he was exactly the man I was briefed about; humble and gentle in character.   From that moment on, I vowed to help in any way I could so he could achieve his goal as the next President of the Republic of Ghana. With the help of Mr. Matsuura, a series of meetings were arranged for Mr. Kufuor with the Japanese politicians, parliamentarians from the ruling LDP and opposition parties as well as the business community.      K. T Wilson and I kept the line of communication between Mr. Kufour and the Japanese business community and politicians opened until the year 2000 which was the year of elections. Whenever K. T Wilson and I came to Ghana, we were always in touch with Mr. Kufuor. It was during this period that Kwadwo Mpiani was introduced to us by Mr. Kufuor as his confidant. Some of our communications were channeled through Kwadwo Mpiani when Mr. Kufuor was out of the country.

Within 100 days of Kufuor’s Presidency, a team of ministers including Hon. J. H Mensah, Majority Leader of Parliament and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Sarfo Manfo, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Hon. Iddrisu, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and myself were sent to Japan to meet Mr. Kabon Moto and officials of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.  The reason for this meeting was find a way of soliciting a loan for the Mallam/Yamoransa Trunk Road; a major issue of concern to the nation at large. The meeting went on as expected and the delegation returned to Ghana leaving me behind to finish the rest of the work so I return at a later date. It was around this time that an official passport was issued to me. For the record, the Government of Ghana refused to pay for my ticket to Japan, per diem and accommodation costs. I had to pay for every expense I incurred on this trip myself.

THE SECURITY BLUNDER - When I approached the Opeibia intersection, there were two cars in front of me, a taxi cab and a saloon car. Within a minute or two, the traffic light on my side turned green and both the taxi cab and the saloon car headed towards the airport junction by turning to the right from the outer lane. I was the third in line and proceeded to the intersection towards Alliance Franchise. There were no Police officers in sight, neither was there a barricade, police motorbike, police car or any security presence at all.  There was also no sign of the Presidential convoy in passage.
